Police Shootings and the Media Bias

Police Shootings and the Media Bias

Politics, Social injustice

Take a good look around you, go through the majority of mainstream newspapers, and watch the most prolific news channels. What do you see? You’ll see news of cops shooting black citizens, claiming them to be a potential threat. Did you realize such news have been redundant for quite some time now? This has been happening for years, and it doesn’t look like it will stop anytime soon.

In the recent turn of events, the infamous and much controversial case of Michael T. Slager, also called the Shooting of Walter Scott, Judge Clifton B. Newman of South Carolina passed the judgment that the case is in fact, a mistrial. We have two questions to ask you, and you need to ask these questions to yourself as well: Have we completely lost it? Do we even realize how far the ripples of this kind of judgment are going to travel?

Walter Scott was nowhere near Slager, and he didn’t have a weapon of any kind on him, not even a bloody Taser gun. He was not at all an imminent danger to anyone when he was shot. And yet, Slager walked out of the courtroom on the basis of a “mistrial”? Who are you fooling here?

And that’s not all that we need to contemplate here, what’s with the media these days? Television viewers and Internet users are all fed the same lie, the same stereotypes, misperceptions, marginalizing the Black community as a race of criminal nature.

Guns and glory, drive-by shootings, rapes, drugs, a lot has been happening, but is it only the Black citizens of America who indulge in such anti-social activities? What about those educated and so called well-behaved men who indulge in equally severe and damnable crimes?

Yes, you may now label us as black men behind the screen, writing all this, and honestly speaking, we don’t even care what you think about us. Your perceptions about us will be only wrong, and because you don’t know who we are. Yeah, we are your Black Lives Matter supporters. Put us behind the bars for raising our voice.

Let’s talk about another instance here, remember the Eric Garner case? On July 23rd, 2014, he was charged for selling cigarettes illegally, and was put into a choke hold until he died of asphyxiation.

They say Americans traded slaves from Africa. No sir, free Africans were brought to the American soil and sold as slaves, without their consent, forcibly, and violently. They weren’t even treated as a human, let alone as a citizen, and you say you are the victim.

The media, the police, they all have been plotting against the black community for so long that now whenever you see a black man passing by, you either lock your car door or hold your bag a bit tighter, you frown in anger and fear, and you start praying to God that he doesn’t do you any harm. Guess what, he is also doing the same damn thing.
