Tiger Woods will be Tiger Woods, No Matter What

Remember when we talked about LeBron James, and how people compare him with Jordan and Kobe? This time, we will talk about the Golf Mogul Tiger Woods. But before we do that, let’s take a look at his feats:

  1. Best Male Athlete ESPY
  2. Best Golfer ESPY
  3. Sports Illustrated Sportsperson of the Year
  4. Laureus World Sports Award for Sportsman of the Year
  5. Best Breakthrough Athlete ESPY Award
  6. Best Male Golfer ESPY Award
  7. Best Championship Performance ESPY Award
  8. Best Record-Breaking Performance ESPY Award
  9. Associated Press Athlete of the Year
  10. BBC Overseas Sports Personality of the Year
  11. Showstopper of the Year ESPY Award
  12. Come-from-behind Performance ESPY Award

Many of these awards have been won by this Golfer multiple times. Now you must be wondering why we are talking about all this? This is because of the recent Hero World Challenge, where he was leading the scoreboard right upto the 9th tee with four birdies, and a great game despite many back surgeries. But the rest of the game took a drastic turn and he was placed at a score of -7.

This was the exact moment when people started remarks about his declining game. Criticizing anyone is so easy, and when it comes to a sportsperson or a noted personality, it becomes even more convenient to say things like “his time is over now”, “he was good once” or “it’s time for him to realize he just ain’t so good anymore”.

To all those who say he should retire from the game, we would like to ask one question: who are you to decide? Yes, it may sound rude, it may sound offensive, but this is exactly what you are doing to him, and people like him. Win or lose, he will always be Tiger Woods, and you can’t that away from him. Had Cassius Clay given himself up, nobody would have remembered him as Ali.

It’s so easy to pinpoint someone. But before doing that, do you even stop for a second and ask yourself, could I be as great as him? Yeah, we said we shouldn’t compare anyone, but then people speak as if they know the game, we are bound to ask this question.

We, for example, can never play a game as amazing as Woods does. We can’t be as good a driver as James Hunt and Niki Lauda (you were expecting Schumacher or Hamilton, weren’t you?).

We all have good days and not so good days, but that doesn’t stop us from being who we are. As Rocky Balboa said in the movie by the same name, “It’s not how hard you can hit, it’s about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward.” Tiger Woods is moving forward, and when he feels like he should retire, he will. What are you doing with your life?
